Jabra Autoscope directionality app question

All,

Learning as quickly as I can, but it makes me have other questions.

Background; Jabra Pro 20’s (first ever HA’s) to be fitted in a couple of days. My Costco is a pretty good drive, so I want to get it right on the first go around, or at least minimize my driving (About 1.5 hrs one way).

Here’s what I think I know; Costco\Jabra cut the programs down to 2 eliminating the program with the adjustable Autoscope directionality, but the features are still there, just have to be set up.

Here’s what I’d like to know; If I have the audi to set the “Hearing in Sound” program’s directionality from front focus to Audioscope, with the width being Audioscope also, will the Jabra Pro app pick up on this and provide the cone adjustment slider? I’ve simulated the Smart Fit, and see where that setting is, and loaded the Jabra Pro app, but without the HA’s I can’t simulate if the slider will be available.

Anything that is programmed in SmartFit is populated/carried over in the App.

No I’ve not heard of this, why would they do that? You can have any of the 4 programs added and I’m sure that your Costco Audiologist would be happy to accommodate you for that, one thing they won’t do is the tinnitus controller.

I’ve been reading a bunch on the Jabra Pro 20’s, and some are saying if you send the HA in for repair or something, it comes back with only 2 programs on it. The all Around and maybe the Hear in Noise. But from what I gathered, the one where you can shape the cone of directionality has been merged into the Hear in Noise, and it’s directionality is only front or forward, and the slider in the new phone app has been removed. I’m looking to see if I can recreate the old cone of directionality. Pardon if my wording is off, I’ve been reading until my eyes cross.

This is what I’m talking about. Guy on Youtube, Hearing Club channel. Interesting stuff.
Jabra Pro 20 Hidden Directionality Feature

So that’s the latest version of the App, can you just install the older version app then, hopefully you won’t put too much into this feature, really the apps are a bit of a novelty to begin with, after a while you find you don’t actually need to play around with everything much.

Yes. But I can’t find the old app. I run Android, and they keep the name but replace the app. I know I’ll probably rarely use the app except in my experimentation phase of learning there HA’s. Hopefully when the new app syncs with the HA’s it’ll give me the slider so I can adjust the cone. These Pro 20’s have so many features it’s hard to learn about them all. Even the Smart Fit program changed a bunch from 1.18 to 2.0. In one tutorial it lauded a learning thing by going to Menu and choosing picking Feature Demonstrations it said you will find a catalog with every feature and a video of what it does. That seems to have disappeared in version 2.0

Yes you can. I did it my self in SmartFit and I prefer this option. However I have not used it as much as I thought I would but it really helped a couple times. I use the All Around program most of the time and the hearing in noise in select situations. Also I find the Noise Filter or Speech Clarity buttons in both to do a lot of good and I use them a lot of the time

Also, you can have 4 programs. I have All Around, Hear in Noise, Music and Outdoors programs. I heard the same comment you did that this happened to someone else. And, your previous sessions settings are saved in Costcos software so they can always put them back. No worries there.

You can set it up yourself in SmartFit.

But the default setting for Hear in Noise in the Nexia/Jabra Pro 20s is for the directionality to be Ultra-Focus, which is Resound’s latest automatic focus programme.

With the same setting in Omnias, I find it quite distracting when it switches the focus on. So I have set Soft switching with adjustable Autofocus and that then gives me the cone adjustment you describe in the app. You can play with it yourself if you know how to use SmartFit or you can get your audiologist to adjust it for you.

Edit: so basically I’m agreeing with @RSW

All,

Thanks for all the answers. I’m first going to try what the prescriber programs, and trust the system. If that doesn’t work I’ll start making incremental changes.

I’ve found in the Smart Fit 2.0 a section under Menu that Smart Fit Guide that is a cookie cutter selection of problems with solutions added directly to the HA’s. That may be a good place for me to start.

Costco should be able to make adjustments remotely. As I recall, there may have been some in-store setup and an additional agreement authorizing remote exchange of info. See if you can get remote support set up when you pick up your HAs.

HOHKate,

I’ll have to see if my ancient Android will pair with the Jabra’s. It’s not on the approved list, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work. I’ll have to see if they do the remote fitting, I’ve read several accounts of different Costco hearing centers that don’t because of connection issues.

That’s ok because few of the phones on the list actually work as intended…

Ive been fortunate in that most times when one of my Android devices haven’t been on the approved to work list for whatever I’m pairing with, they seem to work anyway. From what I read, there’s not much chance of that with the Jabra hearing aids.

Perhaps I misunderstood your post about Autoscop directionally. I was told a few weeks ago at Costco that my Jabra Pro 20 has no directionality programming. Just hear all around, hear in noise and they just adjust the noise and wind filter up and down. My issue with the Jabra is in a noisy restaurant, I hear the background music just fine, but not the person across the table or waitstaff. My old Kirkland KS9, had automatic direction for these situations. If I pick different programs, the noise goes down … but nothing helps the person across the table issue.

So I ordered Rexton Reach and get them fitted on Sunday the 29th. Rexton has a lot of stuff on their web page on the directional programming. I’ll post after I’ve tried them out. I plan to keep both for about a month and then return the set I don’t like.

I use a Samsung S21 Ultra 5G on Android 14.

The Jabra Pro 20’s will be my first set. I’m thinking (hoping really as I don’t have experience) that with the many varied settings that are available in the Resound Smart Fit fitting program that unless the microphones or earpiece are actually defective it can be made to work correctly. I’m going to bet that the vast majority of users never see the man behind the curtain workings that are available to tune any of these brands. I must say it’s been an eye opening experience for me.

This is completely incorrect of course, but it shows that whoever at Costco you were talking to has not been trained properly.

All,
Just got fitted at Costco today. Jabra Enhance Pro 20 RIE 262. I can hear my blinkers in the truck again. We did the REM setup, and she tweaked a few things based on what I said in response to questions. She let me listen to some music, made some other minor adjustments. May be because this is my first ever fitting, but seems like I have a good and competent audiologist.

I did ask about the Philips 9050 and replaceable rechargable battery, and they said that went away with the 9040. Apparently the only hearing aid they offer with a replacable battery is the one I got, and some folks won’t want that because it’s slightly larger than the rechargables. So far I’m happy.

The Jabra seems to have good directionality, I can now understand conversations happening behind me again. And this is in the All Around mode. It was tweaked to match my hearing. We’ll see.

I dont like the default Jabra directionality. The constantly shifting sounds and suppression are irritating to me. I had them adjusted to omnidirectional and much less distracting but then i have troubles with being able to tell where sounds are coming from. I am returning them. I have had 3 receivers go out and now my right aid microphone went out, i can stream to it but it cant pick up sounds from the mic(s). So in 4 months and so many issues i will be going with something more reliable. Also the last app update really messed things up so my tv streamer and Multi mic no longer work in conjunction with my app/phone. Luckily I have my back up set to keep me hearing until i can try out the competition. Shame on Jabra

Yes it’s really unfortunate the issues you’ve had, ReSound are just as good in the reliability department as any others (in most cases) you probably won’t like Phonak’s AutoSence then, but not a problem if your sticking with Costco which still stock Phillips and Rexton, should be interesting to see which you end up with.

I hope that isn’t a portent of things to come with my Jabra Pro 20’s. So far the only thing I’ve noticed is the response to walking in on a fan takes about 4 seconds to recognize the steady state noise and then dampen it. The dampening works well, I’m going to try to get them to work on the speed and transition so that it happens quicker and at a more gradual rate. I’m sure that with all the jillions of settings there are some in there that can handle this.
