I have been having problems with apps on the iPhone muting my hearing aids. Most recently it is the Tesla app driving me crazy. Any time the Tesla app is in focus on iPhone, my hearing aid mics are reduced in volume, effectively muting them. I know the ratio of HA mic audio is adjustable, but only by fitter, I cannot adjust in real-time. When I first had these set up, I could not hear streaming or telephone audio unless mic audio was reduced.
There are quite a few apps that behave similarly, but I can avoid this by settings for the app. Amazon app is a case in point: Amazon app mutes HAs whenever it is in focus if I have the mic enabled (this is used for voice searching). If I go to app permissions, I can turn off mic access for Amazon app and that app no longer mutes HAs. Unfortunately, the Tesla app does not have a setting to disable mic access.
As far as I know, the Tesla app has no reason to need mic access or stream audio. It seems the user should have a little more control of who and what mutes their devices.
The ins and outs of iOS app permissions is not something I understand, but it seems an accessibility issue for apps to unintentionally impact performance of a users accessibility device(s).
So, who do I take that issue to? When I talk to HA manufacturer (Signia in this case), they understand the issue but say it would have to be addressed by Apple or Tesla. Both Apple and Tesla are incredibly difficult to get feedback to.
The OS must be detecting some sound from the app and stream it to your aids. Perhaps there are sound settings within the app.
