How much does the average adult human tongue weigh?

As a first aid instructor I had heard that the human adult tongue weighs about 2 to 3 pounds (weight of the tongue is brought up during choking discussions). Although I have read somewhere recently that the adult tongue weights only about 2 1/2 oz. I don't want to mislead my students. Can someone tell me what the average weight of the tongue is

I would have guessed somewhere in between, myself, but the lower figure is the correct one for an adult male, slightly less, closer to 2.1 ounces, for an adult female. As with other organs in the human body, the tongue is mostly water. Many webpages agree on the weight figure, including this one, wow, word for word, even the question:

Everything … and nothing. It is obviously a spammer or flamer looking to get a rise from the responses. Ignore them and they go away. This idiot for example had all of 1 post on the 13th, 4 days ago … and that was it.

How much do you think Gene Simmon’s tongue weighs?
