How does Phonak Lumity distinguish a phone call from phone streaming?

The software provides two different programs, Phone call + mic, and under the Autosense streaming category, Speech + mic. The latter has a program option that mutes the mic. I find this useful for listening to podcasts or audiobooks while doing cardio exercise with ambient noise.

Both phone streaming and phone calls use the same Bluetooth connection. I’m curious about how the HAs know which is which. Does the phone provide some kind of handshake at the start of streaming or a call that indicates what’s coming?

This depends on the Bluetooth profile which is requested. Does it want to be served a headset or headphones? There should also be one for music + mic. I think. The headphones option must characterize the stream as speech vs music somehow, not sure how that is done.

Yeah definitely it’s the “profile” of the transmitter that determines a phone call from media streaming, all quite easy really for the mobile phones.
A2DP and HSP plus HFP are what comes to mind, there’s others I’m sure.
