Recently diagnosed with APD, and I have the opportunity to get some free Paraidse P90’s to make into low gain hearing aids. I am brand new to phonak target, so I am struggling to make some programming, but basically these are the specs I am looking for it to have and some info. Would someone be willing to make a client for me to import into target based off these? From there I think I can manage to tinker with it.
“For Phonak, it has three additional settings, two with pink noise, for relaxation (1 that adds pink noise into normal sound, and another that is exclusively pink noise for focusing). There is also one
with maximal noise reduction, that focuses on enhancing speech in front of the listener, much like
blinders on a horse cuts out distractions to the rear.” making these the toggable modes in addition to the auto sense.
I doubt that anyone would be able to make much sense of your flow diagram. It all starts from the audiogram and it’s easy for you to go on from there. Anyway if anyone disagrees with my advice, no doubt they will say so.
I got that chart from literature on best practices for low gain aids for APD just not sure how to implement it in target exactly. Regardless I’ll try your way!
I have normal hearing though (actually above average, I can often hear things others can’t, but they really bother me often) , and am really looking for a slight increase in gain and a decrease in background noise (with some frequency compression) , as indicated im the chart to help with APD. Would the audiogram help accomplish that, as it really is tone based to my current understanding. Perhaps i’m mistaken?
I think you probably need to get a professional to help you because I doubt that any of us DIYers have any real understanding of APD. From what I briefly read, the basic “treatment” is extensive practicing listening to words and gradually improving the processing yourself. This sounds rather like what people who have a cochlear implant have to do.
But to get hearing aids that help in the way your flow diagram describes, I still think get the fitting software to do the first fit, which will give you very little gain for the reasons you describe and then you can add gain and reduce background noise according to your diagram. I think even a professional who knows APD is going to take a few goes to get something that helps you. It’s not going to be set it up and that’s it, I suspect.
Good luck and do keep us informed. We can learn with you and may be able to make suggestions as to how to do something or other in the fitting software. But really you should have a professional audiologist with specific knowledge of the condition helping you. But that will mean paying them presumably.
The flow chart is from an expert, so I’m confident in that info. Im going to give it a try and see what I come up with from there. Will update and appreciate the insight!
Got this working for the most part, but I have a question. My apartment has a pretty aggressive air handler that runs 24/7, and im getting bad white noise from it. What can i adjust in target to help?
TK35 gain for very soft tones, but just to confirm its just on one program or all of them show this “white noise”?
Be careful tho, it could be “floor noise” (circuit noise) if you have good low end hearing.
Well it could be “floor noise” then, but you can try it on one program, use the TK35 tool and it will make the adjustments automatically, no need to try and find which frequency.
Got them all programmed using your alls advice and a lot of fine tuning! Really set to low gain and ended up using power domes instead of closed and they are working quite well. Thanks all! Happy to share settings if you’d all like @david.hendon@michael1@tenkan
