Has anyone seen this post about hearing better in a car?

A few weeks back, I was reading a topic, that I now cannot find.

One of the posters said something to the effect of the following:

Once I boosted the mid frequencies, I found that I could hear people in the car.

Or words to that effect. I meant to come back to that post and ask him what frequencies he adjusted - 2-8khz or 4-6khz etc?

I hear very well in normal listening environments and even very well in noisy restaurants etc. But where I am still struggling is hearing some people in the car if they are sitting behind me!

If anyone has seen that post in the last few weeks or if the person who posted that, could get back to me that would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

What hearing aids do you have?

It’ll depend on how many channels / bands your Aids have.

Oticon Intent 1. They are only a couple of months old and I am still working with the audio to get the perfect setup.

I hear very well in noisy environments like restaurants, shops etc. My problems seem to be soft conversational volumes (for certain people) and hearing some people if they sit behind me in the car.

I saw a post a few weeks back where somebody said that they had sorted it for their hearing in cars by adjusting mid/high frequencies and I am curious to find out what frequencies they adjusted to get it to work as hearing in a car has never been optimal for me using any hearing aid.

Which receivers do you have hopefully the power receivers of at least 100db. I wear the INTENT1 aids with the 105db receivers, i don’t have any issues hearing my wife when we are driving. Yes I know most would say the receivers are larger than what tje fitting software say I need. But believe me they are important for my hearing needs. I only have and want the default general program. I put my aids on when I get up and forget about them all day. Your hearing loss may be hard to adjust for. And honestly it took 15 years wearing aids before I realized the true benefits of wearing aids and an audiologist with the patient and willingness to work with me for about 2 years and some 15 appointments for fine adjustments of my aids. But it has paid off. I have worn Oticon aids for 15 years and now it is just a matter of coping my fitting program from one set to the next and making fine adjustments to get the benefit of the upgrade.

I’m nearly always am alone in my car. I try to set my HAs on ‘outside’, rather than ‘all-around’, for the car environment. I’m usually going out on errands and that works well in stores, etc. too.

My last hearing aids were 105db. I will ask about these ones, but I suspect that they probably are, otherwise I would not hear well with these ones compared to the older ones. I also just use the one program - General everywhere I go. It has worked well (for the most part), but I never got the car environment right.

I think my remaining problem is that I am not hearing the high frequencies as well as I should be. The problem, that I need to determine is which frequencies I need to adjust.

@Zebras That’s very helpful. I think I am ok for frequencies below 2khz. I think the problem is for frequencies above that. I will try 2-8khz as that will helpfully address both speech clarity and understanding for soft speech or in car environment as well as give me that feeling of brilliance and shine that you get from 4khz above.

I do hear the person sitting next to me in the car, my problem is with anyone sitting behind me in the back seat.

I couldn’t hear people behind me when wearing my Oticon Xceed because my main program was set to Open Automatic and not Omni directional.

Thank you for mentioning that. That is a point worth mentioning to the audio. However, my second problem is that I have issues hearing some people who have soft voices, but everyone else can hear them. I think the two problems are linked because it seems to be a common theme of low volume, can’t understand/hear what they are saying.

I will see if I my hearing aids can be set to Omni Directional for the car and see if that makes any difference. Thanks.
