Haircut hair in ear and hearing aids

When getting a haircut, do you take your hearing aids off?
Is it safe to put the hearing aids with custom molds back on considering hair from the haircut may be trapped in your ear? Is it a concern that it may push the hair deeper into your ear?

I always remove my aids everytime, l get a haircut.
You don’t want the barber spraying hair oil on the aids. He or she can’t trim properly with the aids in place. Same for glasses too.

You need to wipe clean the pinna (outer ear) before putting back the aids in. I rarely see any cut hair in my ear canal.

I wear my hair military style and I have to take my aids off to the haircut, I have never had issues putting my aids back in, and until the last 3 years I wore ITE aids. I now wear MiniRite aids with full skeleton ear molds.

I learned my lesson a long time ago when I wore BTE hearing aids with earmold tubes (before receivers in the canal were a thing). The barber was trying to be careful but managed to just snip the tube open.

Anyway, I always take them off now, and then I take a wet towel and swipe my ears in order to pick up all the stray hairs that get in there during the cut.

I always take them off. As for hair, I have more problems with hair that sneaks down my back and itches later in the day! Just put them in an envelope in your pocket before you get a haircut. No biggie.

My barber would never cut my hair with my aids in!
Too risky to be clipping & cutting around $6K devices.

I also get a rinse after the cut to get rid of excess hair clippings.

I’m picturing this retired Marine, wearing leather on his Vespa with a High & Tight Fade rippin’ 'round those Ozarks!!! Wow Chuck, Sir!

I never take my BTE’s off whilst getting a hair cut, I unhook them off the top of my ears, and just let them dangle on the tubes, away from my ears, I do get the odd look from other customers though, but I lost any associated embarrassment with hearing aids years ago, I don’t honestly care what anyone thinks…… And I can now have a pleasant conversation with the barber, a fellow soccer fan :upside_down_face: :+1:

In Asia, some of barbers are lady. They provide ear wax cleaning/removal and trimming of ear hairs if it is too long. So we usually removed the HA to have a nice hair cut and blade trimming of soft short hairs near the ears area. Spraying of water and oil do occurs and this might damaged the HA. A lot of nice you tube on Asia barber shop.

My wife has cut my hair for so long I can’t remember when she started. I always take them out and turn on the TV with CC. Then I take a shower and so no problem with hair getting on or in ears or HA’s.

Remove them. Tell the stylist you are deaf without them and it’s best to get as many questions out of the way before starting.

I always take them off. They do actually get in the middle.

Off. Once I remove my glasses and HAs I let my stylist know I won’t hear or see much :upside_down_face:

Being female, my hair isn’t cut short enough to even come near the aids! I wear REI with ear wires connected to the BTE “bean”.

However! It’s the HAIR DYE and rinsing out afterwards that requires me to take my aids out - after EACH and EVERY time reminding the gals that I will be deaf as a cinderblock, no kidding! What’s funny is that every time they will need to ask me something! So there is lots of gesticulating and their surprised faces to see when they realize I’m NOT BS-ing them. There is zero conversation as we know it once those ears come out.

With my new Phonak Life aids I’d SO HOPED to keep them in for the rinsing? But alas! I killed them with 2 swims in the pool, so when I go to the hair gal next week, I’ll likely be wearing my old backup Marvel aids and once again, the drill is … you know it!

Having my hair colored requires that I put an EarGear “sock” on each BTE unit so they don’t get slathered in hair dye.

It was almost easier during the pandemic when hubs cut and colored my hair. He knows the drill, and did a reasonable job on my hair, too!

@1Bluejay Maybe it’s time to embrace the gray :grinning:

NEVER!!! Folks would think I’m my hub’s MOTHER. He also colors his hair and wears NO aids, so he doesn’t have the whole gear-monkey thing like me to work out.

Augh.

Always tell Barber I have hearing impaired need to take off hearing aids. So please, speak directly at my ears thank you.

You don’t want those tiny hairs from cutting, some liquid water or perfume spray during cutting to make contact with your hearing aids. Since it can deteriorate your hearing aids coating if those chemical touch your hearing aids.

Better safe than sorry. Take it off. Tell them straight.
