First post, first hearing aid on order (Phillips 9040)

Hi everyone. I’m new here. Have read a lot and hopefully learned enough to know some of the more important questions to ask.

Last week I saw both a local audiologist and a Costco specialist. The audiologist was wonderful but the Premium package is $8,200+. It was not clear what brand(s) were being offered.

The Costco visit was excellent. The hearing aid specialist is a licensed audiologist with 20 years experience. We found a nice rapport and it went quite well. All of the test results closely matched those of the prior exam.

I’d had my eyes on the Jabra Pro 20 but she recommended the Philips 9040. So that’s what’s I’m getting. The fitting is scheduled for a few days from now. I can’t wait to hear again.

Welcome @Skywatcher.

My audiologist at Costco is the most engaged one I’ve had. He recommended the Philips but I went with Jabra. They never really worked for me, so i went back to Philips and they are my best aids thus far. Hope it all works out for you.

Edit: Don’t let your expectations get ahead of you. It’s a journey.

I asked for the Rexton Reach but the HAS said the Jabra Pro 20 would be better for me. I believe that was a mistake and will probably be returning the Jabra. If you get the Philips 9040, be prepared to ask to upgrade to the Philips 9050 which is reported to be a significant upgrade when it is released at Costco. The release at Costco is any day now since February, so nobody really knows.

Thanks guys.

@d_Wooluf That’s the best advice of all.

@raylock1 Thank you. My timing for the long awaited Philips upgrade seems good. Back in February folks were writing “any day now.” I’ll have until next February🤞.

I was psyched for the Jabra. Now that Philips is in my future I’ve read all about Oticon. The 9040 looks great and I see why it was recommended over the Jabra.

Right off the top of my head a few lessons I’ve picked up from this forum include:

  1. The main goal is better hearing, not perfect hearing
  2. Trust the audiologist/specialist. With few exceptions they want what you want and know far more about how to get you there.
  3. Be patient, communicate with your provider, and trust your own hearing experience.
  4. Among top manufacturers the HAs at equivalent technology levels are excellent.
  5. Go with the best technology you can afford.
5a. Costco is the great equalizer in this regard.

Why the Phillips over Jabra? My SIL will visit Costco soon for her new HAs. I haven’t looked at the Costco offerings before.

There were a couple reasons. She thought the Phillips/Oticon tech is better suited to my needs. Who am I to argue with an expert? And they are seeing a lot of Jabras coming back with defects.

Ps. I’m wearing the 9040. So far so good. Very comfortable and seems to work well. Other than going back for a better fitting dome (two minutes in and out - parking took longer) no issues whatsoever. Nor have I had any need to change programs or make any adjustments via the app.
