EMF Humming problem with telecoil

Anyone else have electronic “HUM” when using telecoil switch? How can I reduce it? I work in a place were lights, computers other things cause this hum. Can it be blocked? Its worse in some areas/head positions than others…I’m hoping there is some kind of filter I could put over my florescent lighting at work?? Interferes with hearing on the phones and I think its causing physical fatigue…I have Phonak Exelias (about 6 years old…but they’ve always done this). Do newer hearing aids eliminate this issue?? my email can: ktinsley@Columbus.rr.com

First, you should change or remove the email to avoid spam collectors. xxxATxxx.rrDOTcom usually works for that.

The hum you hear is likely 60 cycle from AC current. Florescent lights are a great source. Have you asked the audiologist to disable the telecoil? They may be able to. Do you use the telecoil? A phone alternative is a Bluetooth setup which are available with newer aids and accessories for phone and aids.

If you don’t or seldom use the telecoil except for phones, such a setup would improve things by routing the phone directly to the new aids.

I use my telecoils when listening to my mp3 player. In most locations, it works perfectly, but at home I often get a loud hum. I’ve done troubleshooting on it, and the source of the hum is outside my control – it’s coming from somewhere in the neighborhood. I turn down the volume on my hearing aid to reduce the hum and turn up the volume on my mp3 player. That’s a pretty good work-around for my purposes.

Since it’s your workplace, and it’s reasonable that you be able to talk on the phone, I think I would ask your building’s maintenance people to see what they can do to reduce the interference. I’m interested in hearing more about this.

My audiologist told me she can reduce the gain on the telecoil to see if that helps. I told her to never mind. I can tolerate it and I don’t want to take the chance of having reception problems.
