Does anyone have any info on upcoming Widex releases?

Time to find another clinic, it’s unacceptable that your Audiologist doesn’t know, it’s basic information learnt in the first year of training, target is very easy enough to navigate, I’m sorry your having to come to hearingtracker to try and educate your audiologist like this.

In the “Global Tuning” tab in Target, the audiologist can choose among “Prescribed compression”, “Semi linear”, and “Linear”. You might ask about that.

Fundamental programming.
As mentioned, if your audi doesn’t know, move on.
You learning more about programming can assist the audiologist. It’s a team between you and your audiologist. Communication is very important.
Good luck.

Hi Sonic83

I’m a big Widex fan.

My first pair of HA’s were Widex RIC Moments in early 2020 and that was after exhaustive research and trials of all the major HA companies.

The Widex sound is unique.

Unlike you I have only used RIC’s and would never consider ITE’s because of their limitations: physical size, and fewer sales, I think the only advantage of ITE’s is form at the expense of function.
My advice would be to trial a pair of Widex RIC’s

With respect to the new Widex Smart RIC, on a lark I tested them for 2 weeks and was shocked at the changes.

Physically, it sat higher up on my ear and was slightly larger than the Moments. The toggle switch that I had previously assigned to use as an on/off switch no longer existed, and that was disappointing.

But the sound had changed, I can only say that it was richer and superior to the Moment’s and I decided to purchase them even though I was informed that the software platform had only been tweaked and would be wholly changed in a year or so.

I wasn’t waiting for more improvements, I was more than satisfied.

My advice: try out the new Widex Smart RIC and good luck on waiting for the new newer software, eventually all the companies and all the devices will improve, but you want to hear now.

My very best to you and happy holidays

@tenkan, from what I see in the above PDF with the audiogram, the OP obtained it from Harley Street, which is reportedly a good audio clinic?

I don’t know if you are aware, but Harley Street is actually a famous, albeit expensive area in central London (Marylebone) renowned for private healthcare since around the 1850s.

By virtue of the fact that he (Matthew Allsop) is operating there means that he can’t be useless! The rents/cost of operating there would be at a premium.

Good sleuthing there Sherlock…
So yes something is amiss? Must be some kind of misunderstanding from the OP?

Not sure there is a misunderstanding by myself. I want to be able to turn off the compression setting for the Phonaks and my audi just sees no way of doing this at the moment. Maybe there is a way, maybe it has to do with adjusting MPO or something else I don’t know. However at the moment Phonak hasn’t come back with an answer. Which means I’ve given the spheres back because when they heard a loud noise, they turned certain frequencies down in the music program and it took a while for those freqs to come back. This of course is way off the topic of Widex though
Harley street is IMHO a really good clinic. They have given me hours of their time for free because we have not found a HA solution that works for me. All the HA makers seem to be too intent on selling RICs with tiny Terminators inside telling me how my environment should sound. I’d love a simple analogue sound with band adjustment but of course, we’re way beyond that point now

@david.hendon is much more of an expert on ReSound hearing aids than I am. He’d probably be a better candidate to offer an opinion. I’d say using M&RIE receivers does a good job of helping users locate sound in space, but I’m surprised to find very good 3D spatial localization with my Phonak Spheres. So, I’m not missing my M&RIE Omnia receivers as much as I thought I would.

Fully agree. I wasn’t aware. Thanks for the clarification. I have just wanted to make sure.

Thanks for reminding me of one of my favourite characters. :face_holding_back_tears::+1:

I am sorry, but I am not sure what you meant.
I had no intention of undermining OP’s fitting HAs experience.

@Xonic83 , thanks for share info about Harley. Perhaps indeed modification to semilinear or linear fitting is a solution. Maybe MPO also.

@jim_lewis, I think just sharing your experience (which you did) is enough, thank you. You gave even more - about your 3D impression with Phonak Sphere and a lead to someone who also used Resound.

@Bimodal_user, I tend to get infatuated with different things. The advent of the Phonak Spheres was the “thing” for a while, but now I’m settled in with those. I’m currently distracted by the open-source software Home Assistant. It’s kind of a DIY open-source smart home integration system. I have a Ford F-150 Lightning EV that can supposedly automatically backup my house power with its huge EV battery during a grid electrical outage, but the Ford “Home Integration System” does a lousy job of turning on the truck backup when an outage does occur. So, I’m looking into how I can use Home Assistant to tell if there’s no grid power to my house when I’m away from home, notify me, and allow me to manually intercede to start backup power from the truck myself (while complaining to Ford at the same time about the inadequacy of its software). We also had our driveway and sidewalks redone this past summer because of the growth of live oaks lifting and cracking the reinforced concrete paving blocks (!). The driveway/sidewalk repair disrupted our sprinkler system, so fixing that is next in line. I check in here every day or so, though, always looking for exciting new things like the Phonak Spheres.

What I should have said earlier in this post is that Harley Street has really kindly offered me a loan of Widex devices. A loan meaning I can try them out for as long as I want until a new platform comes along. That is real customer commitment right there. I am sort of struggling along right now with no HA’s, because some situations I’m ok and some not and I do’nt want to spend £5000 on a new set only for something better to come out in 6 months which we know for example the Virto I-R will do. . I will have a look at Starkey ITEs but a post earlier in this thread makes me think I should give the new Widex RICs the SmartRICs a go just to hear what they sound like. I am also going to have a play about with MPO and someone in a different post suggested swapping the receiver on the Spheres for a more powerful one which gave him more headroom. I will report back once I’ve done this and let you know how the Widex’s sound. I really do hope they come out with a new platform soon though, it would be amazing if for example Pure mode was available as the standard setting with all frequency bands and most other settings accessible. If anyone hasn’t used Widex aids with Pure mode, it really is an amazing thing to hear. It’s not for isolation of speech in BG noise of course that’s not what it was designed to do, but it is a lovely hearing experience. Another thing I should have explained as to why I am so fixated on directionality meaning I can map where a sound is in 3d: When I was younger and had good hearing, I could use soundwaves and my ears like a bat. I could walk into a room and tell you how big that room was and where people and things were in it. Yes, like Daredevil  you can actually do this just not as super powered as daredevil.
Now the Phonak Lyric deep in my ear, gave me a bit of that ability back. However moving the mics further and further away from my ears makes me lose that ability. The Cone Effect diminishes that ability even more because of course everything has a delay on it. Pure mode in Widex puts some of it back but of course Pure mode doesn’t allow the freq adjustments I need. I think in about 6Y time, hearing aids are going to be a lot smaller and a lot more configurable to what I want. it’s exciting times coming.

@Bimodal_user @Xonic83

Thank you Jim for the vote of confidence in me, but unfortunately I have never used the M&RIE option in Resound as my loss is outside the fitting range for it.

But from what I read, the position of the extra microphone on the outer end of the receiver does allow the shape of the pinnae to improve localisation of sound and enhances the intelligibility of speech.

And although the Nexia isn’t brand new, it is still one of the best designs out there in my opinion and I think it’s easier to tell what’s going on than with the Phonak which seems to have a more aggressive “I know best” approach. I use the Omnia currently. Basically this is Nexia without Bluetooth Low Energy Audio. It mostly works well for me. It’s getting towards the time that one would expect GN Resound to release a new model, but I’m not hearing any rumours yet…

Sorry I can’t help more than this.

This is quite an engineering work …! Ford battery as an emergency power source for house — seems interesting. Nevertheless, I appreciate your input about you experience with Resound.

I could agree with you more about Puresound, it is really amazing, just not a lot of gain potential before it feeds back. I started on a 9030 Philips from Costco and did not like the artificial and very loud boost I got in my hearing. Everyone said give your brain time and after 1 1/2 years it was still just too much gain and I only found relief by doing some DIY. About a year ago my medicare advantage changed and I had an opportunity to purchase Widex HA at $1500. my cost! And I’m a guitar player so the Philips really distorted music for me. I love the Widex smartric I bought. Initially it was set up to 100% full NAL2 for me…wow was that loud and uncomfortable. I do suffer from hyperacusis and I had to pull the Widex out on the drive home…road noise was unbearable. The Audi had a very slight change that did not help and I decided to go to another HearUSA outlet closer to home. The lady tech/fitter, not a full audi, knew exactly what to do. I left with the most comfortable HA ever. They stayed in place, the vented sleeve domes were truly vented this time (original audi used vented sleeves with a very tiny single vent for Signia). She also did not set me up as an “expert” which lowered the gain and used the Widex fitment not NAL2. Because of the lower gains I am able to use Puresound with only occasional feedback if something hits my ear. Wow…it’s like I have normal hearing. I still have trouble with some voices and I did ever with the high gains but I’m now comfortable and I immediately switch to Puresound every morning. I use a modified music program in the app with high freq turned down by two and mid down by one. I’ve tried Puresound for playing guitar and it just doesn’t work very well. Yes I look forward to when Widex improves things, maybe better feedback and noise control in Puresound, but for now they amazing. I can buy a new HA in two more years with a $3800. benefit (up from $3000.). I thought about trying the Philips 9050’s at Costco but I doubt they would be this good for music and no fast processing like Puresound. Oh and Puresound resolved all the complaints I had with my own voice being too loud and annoying to me! The Universal program is just not as natural to me and still has those “own voice” issues for me.

I am a Phonak Audieo P90 user with a cookie bite audiogram. I tried Oticon and had trouble understanding speech but I liked the feeling of surrounding sound. With the Phonak App, I was able to create my own program with decreased compression. I love to hear crickets, birds, and the people behind me talking when i go hiking. Now i can hear my children in the next room calling me. I asked my audi to make this primary and he said he could not change the audiosense program. I turn on my program in the am myself as the audosense sounds muffled. I hope i can adapt my new hearing aids when i get them next year as i still struggle in restaurants. Exploring.

What sort of compression levels are you using?

I decrease the noise reduction in the adjust program in the App, and increase volumn and speech slightly.

Here’s news from Matthew Allsop.
