DIY REM (Real Ear Measurement)?

Yes, 2-4 KHz range amplification is fine, but the normal NAL, DSL and Signia in house formulas give amplification for 6 KHz to 8 KHz maybe 10 KHz, and the amplification suggestion on those frequencies are just too much, at least for me, maybe I’m the few guys that has normal hearing at 6 KHz up to 12KHz.

Thanks so much for outlining your experience with DIY REM. I appreciate it. I was wondering if the tubes on your REM machine are just long soft tubes that lead to a tiny microphone - some kind of tube like this: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255800362701831.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.0.0.6789mdExmdEx1d&gps-id=pcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller&scm=1007.40000.327270.0&scm_id=1007.40000.327270.0&scm-url=1007.40000.327270.0&pvid=fbf25b0f-0ad1-4924-91d2-3c1920658f04&_t=gps-id:pcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller,scm-url:1007.40000.327270.0,pvid:fbf25b0f-0ad1-4924-91d2-3c1920658f04,tpp_buckets:668%232846%238115%232000&pdp_npi=4%40dis!USD!0.37!0.37!!!2.65!!%402103243417037953492488193e1d09!10000002850071164!rec!US!!AB&search_p4p_id=202312281229094064165899907872570855_8

Just thinking about building my own DIY real ear measurement machine (just thinking, probably not gonna do it)

Yeah, the probe tubes that connect to a mic with the other end inserted in the ear are like those. Here’s a pic and specs from a REM tubes vendor: https://probetubes.com/product/50-probetubes/

But I also think you’re probably not going to build your own REM machine. There’s a ton of audiological math embedded in the firmware of those devices to support signal generation, curve generation, display, etc.

brec is still around – again, after a couple of absences. Apparently you (@user34) haven’t been around since 2023.

UPS says they’ll deliver the MedRx AVANT REM Speech+ I ordered from an eBay seller next Monday; $2,500 + tax. I’m deep into the REM-study rabbit hole – books, articles, youtube.

Was there a reason you picked that machine versus something else? Is it better for DIY?

Reasons: software compatibility with Demant – Oticon, Philips – fitting software autoREM feature; availability of used (relatively) affordable vintages on eBay.

@brec, so have you mattered it yet and what are your results compared to previous settings?
