I understand that speech mapping is part of REMs, but when I look in the affinity suite software, REAG and speech mapping looks the same to me.
Only difference I can see is the show speech banana/phonemes option and the other parts such as target/aided response looks the same? am I right? Can someone please explain the difference between REAG and speech mapping?
Thank you!
Speech mapping is a form of REAR (Response) rather than REAG (Gain) - so it includes the contribution of the canal, the input and the gain from the aid. It’s actually a mesure of gross Sound Pressure Level in the canal.
REAG is just a gross measure of the output of the aid which ignores the REIG (Insertion Gain), so no canal resonance or other effects.
Kind of similar to measuring engine output in a car vs. how it actually accelerates in practice.
Thanks for your reply. Is there a difference between REAR and speech mapping or are they considered the same thing?
Speech Mapping is an overlay ‘target’ on the REAR of a proportionate version (by residual dynamic range) of the average ‘Speech Kayak/Banana’. The argument being that if the measured response sits around the top of the ‘grey’ area, that the client is receiving proportionately enough sound in each area to determine speech. Decoding this and dealing with distortion comes down your cochlear…
