SAV enables the fitter or user to alter venting by changing a little plug adapter.
Flexibility seems an advantage unless there are unacceptable costs to it. Are there any downsides to SAV that would cause a preference for a fixed vent? Does SAV require a certain mold size that may not be feasible in some cases?
I always get select-a-vent. The only problem I’ve had is this last time, the inserts were a little loose. I think the large vent hole was slightly too large. So, eventually the vent insert would fall out. This happened a few times and I would have to go back for more inserts. You get a selection of sizes but I’m using one size and the selection includes just one of each size.
So, one little dab of super glue on each insert and they have stayed in the vent hole.
No downside that I can think of. I had them once before I returned my molds. I never figured out how to use them. It sure looked to be a delicate job to change the venting though.
Related question: I notice that there are different sizes of SAV vents. E.g., Phonak’s order form has them at 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 mm. Would that be the size without any of the plug thingies? How does the fitter choose which to order?
You may have misunderstood my question, or at least my intended question. On Phonak’s order form the buyer can select: AOV, Pressure Vent, 2.0 mm SAV, 2.5 mm SAV, 3.0 mm SAV, Customized Large Vent, Cavity Vent, No Vent. So I think the three SAV variants are different size holes in the mold plus various size plugs with each. I was asking about criteria for choosing among the three.
I kind of see what you mean. I had SAV molds and I never really looked at them that much. They were never changed from how I got them, and now they have been returned to Costco. I just looked in my hearing aid supplies bag and I see I still have the little Christmas tree of vents that I suppose are intended to fit into the basic hole. There are six sizes including one that is solid. They kind of look like the ones in this picture, but are longer. Possibly they are supplied with the requested size vent installed, and then they just throw in a Christmas tree of the other sizes in case they have to be changed. That is with Rexton, and Phonak may use a different system.
