Android Bluetooth audio out of sync for Resound + Cochlear?

I switched to Resound hearing aids a few years back. I did this to get rid of the Roger Select and to use bimodal streaming.

Unfortunately, streaming only seems to work on IOS devices. On Android my CI appears to be significantly quicker than my hearing aid. This results in a lovely echo and an awful audio quality.

Bizarrely enough, just how bad the echo is changes everytime I hear the connection jingle on my CI. Sometimes it’s acceptable and I barely notice it. Other times I feel like I’m in a church and can’t hear a thing.

Does anyone have a similar issue? Or have any ideas why this is happening? Or better yet, how to fix it? I tried contacting Cochlear’s customer support in the beginning, but I didn’t get a useful answer.

I have the N8 and Resound Keys. I mainly use a Samsung s10 phone. Though I have tested (and get the same issue on) an s23. My devices are listed as compatible so I shouldn’t have issues.

I took a look at your Resound Key hearing aids compatibility.
The S10 is not compatible.
The S23 is only compatible using Bluetooth Low Energy Audio.

Your Cochlear N8 is much more compatible with Android 10 and higher. It is also Bluetooth Low Energy Audio ready but I don’t know if it’s gotten the update needed to actually use Bluetooth Low Energy Audio.

My thoughts are you need to talk to your CI audiologist. They should be able to shed some light on your compatibility issues.

Or you could switch to an iPhone for simplicity sake. Resound is just getting into the Android game with this new Bluetooth and many devices just are not up to speed with it.

To add more to this, your Resound Key hearing aid is not on the Nucleus 8 compatibility list.

It does appear to have been taken off the list on the Resound website. But it was definitely listed as compatible there when I bought my hearing aid. Furthermore, it states that my device is compatible when I use the QR-code at the top of the page. Also it works flawlessly on its own. So I’m definitely a bit confused about that one.

The only information I’ve ever gotten out of him is that it should work. Sigh. This forum post is very much a last resort for me.

Fair point. I’m just very attached to Android and would rather have streaming in only 1 ear. So, yeah.

It definitely is. Just not for the Nucleus Smart App. https://www.cochlear.com/global/en/compatibility/compatible-resound-hearing-aids

Mostly I just find it weird that nobody I’ve spoken to seems to experience the same thing I do.

Regarding why you haven’t heard from others with similar issue. Although there are a fair number of CI users on the forum, they’re still a minority. Combine that with you being the first time I’ve heard of somebody using a Resound Key. I think the solution is a newer hearing aid and a newer phone. Perhaps what you have should be compatible, but my experience is that newer stuff works better (although not perfectly) Edit: Deaf piper has some really useful feedback below.

That is very true. Both my audiologists said they have never seen my exact combination before and even a google search yields exactly nothing .

New stuff very much tends to work better (Except for the roger select, but that is off-topic). But I’m pretty sure this is the newest Resound aid I can have. In 2023, when I got my hearing aid, my audiologist told me that only the Key and the Enzo Q were suitable for my level of hearing loss. I did trial the Enzo Q, but I never tested whether streaming works because I didn’t gel with it at all. So, even if I had the money I can’t buy anything. And the s23 I tested is plenty new I think.

@Xalifam I’m bimodal N8, Enzo 3D & iOS. I have a slight lag (always have had) between my devices. Sometimes it’s really noticeable and other times I don’t hear it at all.

To get my devices bilaterally streaming properly, my CI Aud has to “link” all my devices on the mapping computer. If this doesn’t happen they won’t stream bilaterally. Every time I get a new hearing aid or send my 3D for repairs I have to go back to my CI Aud to have them “linked” again. It’s the same if I get a new iOS phone. It’s a real pain in the butt! I’m assuming Android phones are the same. (Not that I know anything about Android phones) Whereas bilateral recipients don’t have to get their devices linked.

I also had a slight echo, my Aud remapped my CI, and gave me a complete new map to try and get the echo issue fixed. The new mapping only improved my echo issue.

Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the NS app? By doing this occasionally I have found it helps improve some of my issues. It won’t fix the streaming issue though.

I have found after I’ve been to the CI Aud and got everything working properly I go home and backup my iPhone in iTunes on my computer. Then if I lose my “link” or send my 3D for service I just reinstall my last backup and all of my devices are working again as they should.

The slight lag does sound exactly like my issue. Except that I only have it on Android. I stream to my Ipad regularly and have never experienced an issue.

The linking thing is very much a problem for Android too! It’s why I never tested streaming on the Enzo Q when I trialled them. I couldn’t actually get an appointment with my CI audiologist in such a short timeframe. Speaking of which, a new mapping is something I could bring up with him.

I have tried reinstalling the app a few times. It sometimes appears to fix the issue. For five minutes, then it’s back again. I don’t use it on my Ipad though, so maybe that’s the issue? I’ll try to install it to see if it gives me issues.

The backup honestly sounds very useful. I was planning on sending my hearing aids in for an unrelated issue and wasn’t looking forward to the linking thing. I’m definitely going to try it and see if I can get it to work.
Edit: iOS works fine, with or without app.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughtful replies. I’ve definitely got a few things to think about now.

This is just a random thought, do you turn off BT on your iPad before you stream on your Android phone? I know you can’t have 2 devices connected at the same time. Sorry I can’t remember how it affects things though. I wonder if that’s the cause of your streaming issues.

There’s a lot of talk on Aussie CI groups about s24 and s23 poor quality of sound. Is it possible your poor quality of sound is an Android fault?

I do turn off Bluetooth when using my phone. And in the rare case that I forget to turn it off it won’t connect at all so it’s immediately obvious.

That is one of my suspicions. The aids work much better with iOS in general so I wouldn’t be surprised. Though I do have to say that I didn’t notice poorer sound quality in the S23 I tested when compared to the S10. Worse Bluetooth performance just seems to be an Android thing in general.
