Yep, my personal reasons for not wanting aids for a number of years was denial, and vanity issues. One often hates to admit they’re getting old, deaf and blind, and need HA’s, or eyeglasses. And of course in retrospect, it is stupid, you’re going around 1/2 blind, cannot see street signs clearly when driving, and in the instance of my hearing, how much I was missing out on, withdrawing from conversations, and finding myself in my own little shell, and little world.
My hearing loss cause can be attested to working in a passenger rail yard for 30 straight years. That was my sacrifice working in the railroad industry. And yes, have to count your blessings, some faired worse.
I knew of a couple men getting hit with 480V AC @100A on the yard stands. One guy came back to work, the other didn’t. The one who didn’t was cleaning a female Cable Receptacle with a Screwdriver when his partner threw the breaker a block away. They never found the Screwdriver, it exploded in his face.
The other guy who did come back, I seen them take him out of the yard unconscious. His Belt Buckle, and Boot Lace Eyelets were smoking.
And others, like Carmen at Beech Grove Indiana, which 40 tons of passenger car fell on their hands when jacking the car to change a broken Bolster Spring, You can be assured they never came back, both losing major portions of both hands, trapped under the car till other workers could free them.
Luckily I never seen-witnessed any deaths in 30 years.
