Yep, the lab in Livermore has successfully sparked a fusion reaction that released more energy than went into it. The fusing atomic nuclei released 3.15 megajoules of energy—about 50 percent more than had been used to heat the pellet.
But look at the details, they are only counting the 1.8 (or 2.1 ?) million joules (MJ) of energy from the Lasers. They didn’t count the energy used to power the Lasers. If you count the total amount of input energy, then the energy produced is only something like 2 percent. Nevertheless, it’s still an important milestone.
