Scratchy on-hold music

I’m progressively more and more annoyed at music-on-hold systems. Back in the 90’s, they used to play a trivial simple tone melody while on hold. Now they play complex music selections, which never make it through the pathetic audio of the highly-compressed digital phone systems and come out distorted and scratchy.

As my midrange hearing has deteriorated, I find I’ve become very sensitive to high-pitched distortion.

Anyone else annoyed by this?

I absolutely agree with you on this. The phone system cannot play classical music properly so why it’s commonly used for hold music is beyond me. I also don’t need reminding how important my call is every 10 seconds.
