Hello,
I currently have a Roger EasyPen, which I got at the end of 2020. I have gone over the 10,000 cycle limit for the micro-b port, and for the past 6 months, I was using weights to keep it in just the right place to keep charging and using it.
I purchased a few untested Roger microphones, two Roger Select and two Roger On. Both of the Roger On devices can connect to my hearing aids and seem to work fine. Both of the Roger Selects give a flashing red LED on the power button 20 times, then the LEDs on the front light up green in a circle, repeat the pattern. I’ve uploaded a video to my site so you can also see what I mean: https://hb.hn/VzxUzotSgG.mp4
I’ve read on some forum posts that this is an issue with the battery, and it needs replacement. If this is the issue, are there any replacements that don’t require soldering? I paid $1000 Canadian for all 4 devices and I think I got a good deal even if I can’t get these two to work, as my audiologist quoted $500 for repair of my EasyPen and ~$2200 for a new Roger On V3 as I am no longer a student.
Thanks,

Sounds like a bad battery. If you are handy, you can replace the battery. Several have done it. See this thread: Roger Select Battery Replacement
It looks from the boxes in your picture (as much as I can see) that these units are not "iN’ i.e. do not include licenses, so wondering how you connected the Roger On to your hearing aids. Did you buy licenses separately or do you have “Trial” aids? Or are they actually Roger On iN models?

Hello Ray,
I’ve fixed computers and laptops before, so I should be able to open this up and close it without causing extra damage. Didn’t try opening my EasyPen to fix it as it doesn’t seem to have a way to open it and I don’t have any equipment to solder stuff at the moment, but I think it would be a cool experience to try fixing these Select devices.
They do not say iN and I believe they are the V1 variants of the devices. I did a capstone project on my hearing aids, and I believe there are only two differences between the iN and non-iN device.
From my understanding, the iN ones have 3 licenses available on them and have the Rogger receivers installed internally. As I have a Roger EasyPen I’ve been using for 5 years, I thought that meant I had the receivers installed internally with my Audeo Paradise hearing aids and the MyPhonak app shows it is using RogerDirect + Mic when it was on.
I think as long as you have the licenses once you can use them for any Roger device if you have the receiver installed within the hearing aid itself. When I got my hearing aids during high school, I think the audiologist installed them first then did something similar to the license transfer on the iN devices but it was dedicated for just that. Not sure about the iN devices, if anyone knows about that they can chime in.
Thanks,

They are pretty easy to take apart but you need a steady hand to do the welding which I don’t have anymore. Yeah once you have licenses they are good for most Roger products. Let us know how you make out. Several people here have replaced batteries so can offer help if you need it. The IN devices, V1 & V2 have 2 licenses installed in the devices but additional licenses are available using free software available from Phonak. Aparantly you don’t need the software to get the additional licenses for version 3 devices.
Happy hearing

Hello,
I’ve ordered some replacement batteries I found online. They seem to have the right connector, so I will not need to do any soldering for this attempted repair.

An update to this post.
I’ve repaired both of the Roger Select devices. I also recorded a video of myself opening one up, replacing the battery, and closing it. It was a fun process; one of them had a severely puffed battery, and the other had a lot of corrosion on the battery, so it was a good thing I replaced them.
Thanks,
