I bought the ReSound Nexia 9 hearing aids in January. Truthfully as a long time wearer of Phonak aids, these sounded great out of the box. But after about 8 weeks I noticed that the left one sounded like it wasn’t working well. I figured it was the wax filters, but it wasn’t, then I noticed that when I streamed any other source it worked fine, so that ruled out the speaker. They sent it back and gave me a loaner. By time I went to pick up the repaired aid the right one had the same exact symptoms. They sent that one out for repair. I got that one back. It was working for another week. Now the left one is doing the same thing again. I paid $6500 for these aids, what am I going to do? I can’t countenance keeping such an unreliable set of aids long term if I’m going to be left holding the bag for repairs when the warranty period expires. I think my Audiologist will do something to make this right. Anyone else struggling with these hearing aids reliability?
- Why are you buying the Nexia and not the newer Vivia 9?
- I would see is you can get the Nexia exchanged for the Vivia 9 at no additional cost.
- I thought there were issues with the microphone filter.
- You do realize that you could have bought the Jabra hearing aids, basically the same hearing aid as the Resound brand, at Costco for under $2,000.
I have the Jabra Enhance Pro 20s purchased from Costco. My understanding is that they are very similar to or basically the same as Resound Nexias. I have had three separate instances where one of the aids microphones have failed in a little over a year (feels like the aid is cutting in and out in the presence of sudden noise - extremely annoying and uncomfortable). I have heard that this has been a common problem for many people that have Resound Nexias and Jabra 20s. The first 2 times, Costco sent them back and they came back “fixed”. The last time it happened, I brought them back to Costco and the hearing aid specialist replaced the outer casing with an updated type that now has removable filters for each microphone. The specialist also cleaned the internal microphones and indicated that they had to do this for several customers. My aids are working fine now, but I do not know if the issue is truly fixed for the long term.
I sincerely hope you are able to get your Nexias issues resolved in an acceptable manner. We really need these things to be reliable.
If you just bought a Nexia , return them . @user990 is 100% correct
I have both Nexia 9 and jabra pro 20 … the nexia have been back to resound 2 times … and the jabra’s will be going back for replacement next week.
The last nexia’s were replace with new units and seem to be working fine for the last two months … Fingers Crossed
There have been several posts about this problem
@RJM … from your description I think you must be using M&RIE receivers … and a sudden noise will switch to a Noise setting which switches the M&RIE microphone’s off and switches to the front microphone which is not working. My failure has always been the front microphone.
Not using M&RIE receivers. Problem is associated with microphones in body of hearing aid. Been through it 3 times.
Front mic? There’s only one speaker, the receiver, right?

Typeo or a brain fart … I will correct it .
No problem, everyone makes mistakes. The better people admit and move on. This one is relatively inconsequential.
Hope your problem gets sorted.

I had no idea at the time. I had phonak audeo’s for about 10 years with no problems at all before this. I figured I’d be treated well paying top dollar. He threw in a tv Bluetooth streamer and has offered to upgrade me to molded in ear receivers (which is what I’m used to). A conversation needs to be had.
I believe they made some changes to address the Nexia issue with the Vivia. So the Vivia my be a better hearing aid.
I hope your audiologist will make things right for you.
I am having the same exact issue. After a few months the Omni directional mics start to go quiet and the volume cutting begins even in regular conversations. This is my 3rd time having this issue and going on for a 4th in 10 months. Too bad I’m outside of the return period so I’m a regular in the audiologist office now. There is something seriously wrong with some of these.
I think they got a batch of bad microphones … I hope they have changed there source for them!
I went to my audiologist today. He took both aids from me and they are going to try replacing the shell with one that has an external filter on the outside. If this doesn’t work they’ll upgrade me to the Vivia next time. I’m kind of disappointed in Resounds solution thus far, I guess patience is a virtue.
Any ideas to force the upgrade?
That seems like a reasonable legal solution. Just make sure you document everything that has happen in case you need to go full legal.
If you paid with a credit card, I would check to see if there is some relieve with them.
Frankly unless this practice has the best audiologist in the country or your hearing is such that the Vivia doesn’t work for your hearing loss, this practice should refund some money to you for selling you last year’s product.
I’m seeing more and more comments here and ,on Reddit , about resound issues with the mics and receivers, even some people complaining about the Jabra 30/Vivia . I don’t see these comments about any other hearing aid manufacturer . Is it me or this is a strong sign of issues with quality control , this does not look normal.
Nope, you can’t possibly believe anything you read on Reddit right! But seriously there’s really no way to know if these people who complaine even know what their talking about? Na I’d say as number 3 or 4 top seller company that it’s just an urban myth, if you look at total sales of these models and only a handful of complaints wouldn’t point to a major issue, but the microphone housing had to be redesigned on those Jabra, so possibly people are just pointing at that as “must” be the reason for their own issues, when you hear of a recall then you know, Sonova did similar with batteries and charger issuesat one time.
That’s true and you are correct and I don’t want to jump into conclusions based on so little data. That said , the complaints are consistent about the same issues.
Yes, I remember the issue with Phonak and the KS10s
I’m totally hoping it’s a fluke. I really enjoy the hearing experience provided by these aids. I’m also a guitar player and I like the way they sound when I play with others in music mode. I really hope they identify the problem and come up with a real solution soon. I’ve no idea at all if the Vivia’s are an upgrade or not. Many times upgrades are actually downgrades if you know what I’m saying. Anyway, thank you everyone for your thoughts and guidance. I’ll keep you posted on the outcome.
Resound made significant improvements in hearing-in-noise environments. I believe they also made changes to fix some of the issues they had with the Nexia.
So unless your hearing loss required a variation of the Nexia line of hearing aids that is not available in the Vivia line or you wanted a different type that’s not available in the Vivia line, you should have received the Vivia hearing aid for the amount of money you paid out.
