REM and IIC/CIC

Two questions please. Firstly, is it possible to do REM with IIC/CIC HAs? I would think the tube would break the seal in the ear canal thus changing the fitting/response?

Secondly, does anyone or is it even possible to do REMs when self fitting? In other words, what sort of equipment is involved and expect outlay costs?

Thanks in advance.

No difference when using custom made molds for RIC or BTE, the clinic’s don’t have any problem in most cases.

Well anything is possible, but the equipment is very expensive and you need to be properly trained in its use, because you asked… you shouldn’t even be thinking of doing it yourself.

Appreciate the prompt response. Please don’t make assumptions, though :slight_smile:
I’ve worked as an Audio Engineer and within the audio field my entire life - just not in audiology.
I picked up Self Fitting within hours - and within months have tweaked the aids (two different types and brands) to perfection.
I see no reason why I can’t self learn REM in time either - but that was the question - is it possible to do at consumer level. Is it a $2K investment or a $20K investment. The former would be possible, the latter probably not. It would have helped if I had ever seen or experienced REM; alas, my original audiologist does not do it so I have nothing to go on about what is involved.

I think that Natus Aurical Freefit equipment is used by many audiologists. One said (jokingly) the correct way to know how far to insert the probes (which should be positioned next to the eardrums) is to push them in until the patient jumps, and then back off a millimeter or two :wink:

Maybe review an AudiologyOnline course named;
Advancing the Leading Edge of Hearing Aid Fittings with Real Ear Measures
You have to Register. But it’s free as long as you don’t need to earn education credit.

That’s great, true it’s not that hard, so in this case why do you want REM? I mean it’s not going to help so much for you, if your happy with the programming to date.

Can you do it, well it’s possible but it’s expensive, used on eBay can be had, but to be of any use they need to be calibrated by a specialist (being in the industry you’ll know how important this is) new ones wouldn’t be worth it for your case, I mean how many times would you actually use it?
Personally I’d stick to your current set up, REM is not the holy grail of fitting, as you have found out doing DIY.

Great info - thank you.
I guess I’m a perfectionist but you’re right, I think I have refined my HA tuning as it is. Probably not a worthwhile investment at all.

Just FYI; Here’s something you don’t see very often; Also, I don’t know if these machines require periodic calibration?
