Problems with dome

Hello,

I am on my trial with RITE HA right now but have some problems with dome. I’ve got open dome, medium size and it seems to be ok- not coming out, coming in easily- but it’s terribly uncomfortable in my ear canal. I mean, it makes it so itchy that I need to take the receiver out all the time and scratch the ear because I can’t stand it. When I take the receiver out, the ear canal is still irritated. Has anybody had similar problems? At first I’ve thought about some kind of allergy, but aren’t domes hypoallergic or something?

I experienced that for the first couple of weeks. Not so much of a problem now, but occasionally it does itch. I have custom molds, so I just grab the mold and run it in and out a few times to scratch the itch.

I found that when I was a new wearer, it took about 2 months for me to stop experiencing uncomfortable itchiness on a daily (hourly?!?!?) basis. In my experience, cleaning the domes thoroughly either when I removed them or just before I put them back in at the start of the day eases the itching. I sometimes just clean with water, but often with an alcohol wipe, or I have used “hearing aid wipes” that my audiologist gave me to trial and review. Because a hearing aid is a foreign body, some people’s ears react by over-producing earwax for the first little while of wearing them until their ears adjust to it. My audiologist assured me this is normal and I’ve heard/read similar stories from other HA users. Persevere. You will overcome. In the meantime, don’t scratch too much as scratching can actually cause inflammation in the outer ear, leading to what can be a really painful ear infection!
