Oticon Intent user review

Isn’t that what Noise Tracker II does? It has off, mild, moderate, considerable settings.

But is Multiscope Adaptive Directionality using Noise Tracker II and Environmental Optimizer?

I don’t know as I’m not a Resound user.

In layman’s language, that’s kind of what it felt like. I went to a cafe with my wife where I really struggled to hear. I would fiddle with my 3D programs and try to tweak settings but could never get a satisfactory result. With the Intents, there was definitely less echo/reverb from all the voices in the cafe but I could still hear other tables quite distinctly. But as soon as my wife started talking, I could hear her more clearly than ever (and she has a really quiet voice), while the background noise was suppressed. So I detected something clever going on…

Thanks OMG! I’m coming up to 3 years with my Phonak Audeo Paradise P90R/s. Fingers crossed My setup is finally improving with the new hearing instrument specialist I go to now. He put Power Receivers in them a week ago. Today the right one popped out. That’s never happened in 20 years.

My fervent hope is that AI or whatever will solve the speech in noise issue. By the time I can get new ones (5 years life here) maybe another generation of improvements will have occurred. I’ve used HA’s for over 20 years.

I have had my INTENT1 aids for just over 24 hours and I am sold on them. I am comparing them to my Real1 and More1 aids. The sound is very natural. I can now understand my very soft spoken stepson. I can now sit in my living room and carry on a conversation with my wife while the TV is on at its normal volume that my wife likes. I can now enjoy the TV and hear what is said with just my aids and the volume at my wife’s level. I can listen to an enjoy the music playing on our Jeep Grand Cherokee’s entertainment center set at my wife’s comfort level, and carry on a conversation with my wife sitting on my worse ear side. The connectivity is great with my Samsung S23, no the hands free isn’t working, but that is a bug that Samsung is trying to fix. I had dinner at Red Lobster yesterday at dinner time with no issues with background noise.
I must say I only have the default program, t-coil with microphones, the TV adapter, and remote microphone. I haven’t needed to use the TV adapter. I will find out if I need the t-coils tomorrow morning at our church service. I have had only one case of uncomfort and that was at the Jeep service center due to echoing from the bare concrete and metal of the service area. I have acrylic custom ear molds with a very small vents. No issues with my voice.
My VA audiologist preformed the REM on my aids, as well as a speech in noise testing, the base settings for my INTENT1 aids were copied from my Real1 aids.
I believe i am well on my way to achieving my dream goal of only needing the default general program. Having started my hearing aid history with aids that didn’t have the capability for but one program and no volume adjustments, I am hoping to not need any program but the default general program.

Thanks for that review, Chuck!
So you’re using the acrylic molds, rather than the ones you had for the Real, so would you say they’re as comfortable for you?
I’ll be fitted July 16th, so I’ll be going from the Mores to the Intents.
I’ve found my Mores work really well for me without any of the MSI processing, so I’ll be interested to hear the differences.
Glad they’re working so well for you.
Your relationship with your audi, and ability to work together has led to a great outcome!

Did Oticon ship them with the SmartCharger by default, or did you request it in advance?

My ear molds are absolutely the most comfortable ear molds I have ever had. The charger was done by my audiologist, at the time my aids were ordered I didn’t even know the smart charger was a option. My aids were ordered the first of May and they had been at the clinic since the 9th of May. Due to my schedules and the desire of my audiologist I didn’t get them until yesterday. My audiologist didn’t want to fit me with my aids until he had been trained, and had experience with fitting the aids. I found out yesterday that one of the Oticon corporate audiologist talked my audiologist through the settings for my aids. I do have some real issues with speech understanding.

It’s too bad the same molds can’t be used with your Real to get a more accurate comparison as it’s probably some combination of the molds and Intent providing the improvements.

How are the new molds different from your old ones?

The molds are not the issue, but the Intent uses a newly developed receiver, which is not interchangeable with the Real/More ones.

I realize the new receiver wire can’t connect to earlier generation aids. Are you saying the receiver/speaker end is the same for the Real and Intent so the mold could fit on that end? The domes are the same but the speaker also could be shaped slightly differently?

My receivers are embedded into my custom ear molds so it isn’t to switch my molds between the Real1 and INTENT aids. Also what i find interesting is that the vents for my More1 aids are smaller than the vents for my Real1 aids, and the vents for my INTENT1 aids are even smaller than the More1 aids. I understand the difference between the More1 and Real1 aids, it is due to a better feedback circuit in the Real1 aids. But i don’t understand the really small vents of the INTENT1 aids, unless due to the improvements my receivers are 100db for the INTENT1 aids instead of the 105db vents of the More1 and Real1 aids.

Another note the battery life of the INTENT1 aids are definitely better than the More1 or Real1 aids.

Sounds like you’re seeing improvements from a smaller mold vent selection. The Intent may be adding to the picture but it’s hard to say as it’s not a direct comparison due to different venting. Possibly the Real would be nearly the same with an identical mold. Either way it’s an improvement for you and you don’t have to justify the cost.

The smaller vents is only a very minor part of the difference, the INTENT1 aids set up the way my audiologist has them, I must add with the help of one of Oticon’s corporate audiologist has finally given me back hearing memories that i haven’t had since my teens and twenties. I haven’t been able to enjoy music since I started having tinnitus at Thanksgiving 1975. I just tried some of the old songs I enjoyed from my teens and twenties and it even sounds better than it did back then. And I am not using a music program on my aids just the default general program. I tried instrumentals and songs from singers.

Are you able to find out what settings were changed from your Real to Intent? Others might be able to get similar improvement with those changes.

My baseline programming was copied from my Real1 aids which was extremely good for speech understanding, to my INTENT1 then my audiologist with the help from Oticon’s audiologist developed the changes. When i picked up my aids my audiologist did the REM to verify my aids, were correct in my ear canals. Also, my audiologist did speech in noise testing to get a baseline for speech in noise settings. I haven’t had a chance to really test that yet. My audiogram doesn’t tell the whole picture of my hearing issues when it comes to speech understanding. As my disability rating states, my hearing loss is severe by tone test and profound by word recognition. I don’t have access to the Gene2 software so i don’t know the settings. My audiologist did a number of test while i had the microphones in my ear canals. Each time it was run he made changes from a set of instructions he had from Oticon. And each time the test was run my hearing of sounds go clearer. I can tell you this my aids are set to 100%+ of my audiogram. It took me 18 months to be able to handle that level of setting of my aids, and that is also the reason my receivers are more powerful that what most believe they should be when looking at my audiogram. So no I am not a typical patient.

Glad you are getting on well with them @cvkemp. Still loving mine! It’s refreshing not having to change batteries either.

Also, it is clear that as I’m hearing more sounds and knowing where exactly they are coming from which means my brain is having to adjust more as not been able to do this previously, which means it is a significant improvement over the Reals.

Have been told I speak quieter than I used to as well and don’t need the TV as high as it was before.

Look forward to hearing more from you as you settle with them over the coming months.

You can ask for a printed report of the settings for you More, Real, and Intent and then compare.

Great to hear (so to speak) that the Intent 1s are doing the trick for you. I’m very happy with mine.

cheers.
