Intent1s and Starkey Edge AI

I have worn Starkey CICs for over 25 years. But because of my top end hearing loss, I was advised to change to Oticon Intent1s BTE.
But ever since, after many visits, speech seems trebly, and cannot always make out what people are saying. The App works great with iPhone and TV Streamer. After many visits I suggested that maybe the problem lay in the fact my brain was use to Starkey’s sound. So I am trialing Starkey’s new Edge AI. Has anyone found a problem with them using the iPhone. When I receive a call, I cannot hear myself talk, it’s as if it cuts my voice out so I can hear the call. Also if you The Audi doesn’t know Starkey, he only knows Oticon.
If an Audi doesn’t really know the Starkey programme, I am concerned I will be back to square one, it’s called ‘frustration’. It seems to me stick with Oticon as he knows them, but the Starkey seems better.
Has anyone had the above problems. And any advice is gladly accepted re Oticon and Starkey.

I have just returned the Starkey edge AI 24 ITE aids. There were a few issues for me, but when making calls with my iPhone 13, there was an awful whining noise which was just as loud as the speech if not louder. (The whine was also there when I initiated a call on my landline, but disappeared when the call connected as it’s not a Bluetooth phone.). Starkey said that they had other reports of this and came up with a fix, which included a firmware update and this reduced the volume of the whine but never got rid of it. I’m not sure if this is correct, but Starkey seemed to think it was due to the recent IOS update .

Here’s the thing. Any hearing aid can be made to sound as good as another make, if programmed correctly, but above all, Oticon’s entire paradigm is built on full 360 degree sound, so if they sound too trebly, I’d wonder if this provider performed Real Ear Measures, and used the proper fitting formula for you.Another thing is the change in sound between RIC/BTEs and CIC is quite different, and if he amped up the gain for your high frequencies, that’s adding sounds you haven’t heard for quite some time.
It can take the brain several weeks to adapt to a different sooundscape, as well, so it just may be you need more time, but I’d strongly recommend you make a list to take to your next appointment, and have him address them.
HAs always sound great in the sound booth, but once you get out on the street it’s a whole different story!

If you have a copy of your audiogram you should post it in your profile so we can be more helpful to you.

Hi Flash

Thank you for your reply Yes they all sound great in his room, then you go outside, and it puts it into perspective. The real World.

The Starkey’s seem marginally better sound wise, common sounds in the house sound like they did when I had the CICs, but speech is still a problem. The Intent1s are a lot sharper, or trebly.

I did not have REM done. But all in all I am at the end of my tether with trying to get an Audi to understand, and adjust to suit!
