I’m sorry. I forgot you posted your audiograms. I had seen them before, but forgot you had the ski slope hearing loss configuration like I do. Knowing this, you very well may be offered the Cochlear brand hybrid. This model is also called Electrical Acoustic Stimulation (EAS) by other brands. It is a sort of combination hearing aid and cochlear implant.
Put very simply, the electrode array is the part of the internal part of a cochlear implant that is inserted down into the cochlea to make it possible for the implant to electrically stimulate the nerve and allow the signal to be sent to the brain. In normal hearing the hair cells along the cochlea are stimulated acoustically. The electrode simply provides a means to avoid the damaged hair cells and transmit sound to the brain a different way.
The short electrode array I referred to is used in Cochlear Americas hybrid implant that is supposed to avoid inserting the electrode array the usual depth into the cochlea. The idea was that if you avoid the usual depth of insertion, you could avoid damaging hair (nerve) cells deeper in the cochlea where many of us have some natural hearing. Intuitively this makes sense, but if you lose your low pitch hearing at some later time, you may need another surgery to explant and reimplant. Cochlear Americas claim that the short electrode can redirect the signals, and another can be avoided. If that is true, then everyone should be getting the short array. They are not.
The cochlear implant was invented by a man in Australia. He went on to form the company we call Cochlear. In Australia, that company does not use the short electrode any more. They haven’t for more than 10 years.
Cochlear implants are much more than which phone is compatible, what version of Bluetooth they use, what gadgets make them waterproof, etc. The internal parts are equally, if not more, important than the processors and accessories on the outside. If you decide to get a CI, familiarize yourself with the anatomy of the ear so you can have some idea of how it works. We have to be educated consumers.
If I have overwhelmed you, I apologize. I just think this point is too important for me to remain silent. If you want the sources for the information, I will be glad to share them with you.
