Thanks for all of y’alls input… thus far no problems at all. The suggestions of investigating if they are still under warranty or my Audiologist can do something… again I’ll share that I’ve never seen an Audiologist except when escorting my elderly dad… I’m 100% DIY… bought all of my hearing aids (I have several pairs) off ebay or otherwise. So, a comfortable stash of back ups… but these P-90Rs are my favorite and are working seamlessly after my pool incident. THANK YOU ALL!!!
You need to clean them thoroughly. chlorine is a strong corrosive. It needs to be washed off. It will quickly destroy the electronics inside. I suggest washing them carefully with plain water then drying them again. Better yet find a good audiologist who can take them apart and clean them. Tell him exactly what happened and that they were exposed to pool chlorine.
A hobby of mine is electronics. Hearing aids are way more than electronics, bear that in mind while I say that if I needed to clean anything related to electronics I would use 99% isopropyl alcohol, or I would use that to displace any other thing I used for cleaning, especially anything water based.
Hearing aids are so dang small though that I doubt the ability of anything to just seep in and clean them (seep, maybe, but cleaning usually requires a little agitation).
I’m also unsure of the effectiveness of isopropyl alcohol in this scenario.
This is truly amazing. Just wonder how you did that. I guess it requires a lot of learning and testing. By the way, I’m also interested in DIY with my Phonak Virto Q, but was still looking for the software and hardware needed. I saw under another post you have kindly helped others in need. Could I ask for your help with a link to Phonak Target software fit for my hearing aids? Many thanks in advance.
Now stop and think for a minute. Does spraying your aids with wd 40 sound like a good idea. No offense
From one Bluejay to another … I bought the ReDux (hideously expensive!) in order to keep my aids dry in a super humid climate as well as after slathering workouts. First time I dried my Phonak Marvel aids out, it pulled just under 4uL of moisture out, but ever since, it pulls less than 0.5uL. I’m still doing the same workouts and living in the same humid place, so I’m assuming that after a MAJOR drying out, I’m chugging along with drier aids?
Cottemar, I’m hoping to do the IDENTICAL thing (but not to clean the pool, just enjoy it!) as soon as our 9-month pool remodeling is finished (if it ever is).
I just picked up my new Phonak Audeo Life aids today - first pair of these that my new audi has fit anyone with, so I’ll be a bit of a guinea pig!
Phonak’s website says they’re “waterproof” to 19"; Dr Cliff has tried for 500 hours to kill a pair of them with water, so why not just jump in a pool?
Since I live daringly, I’ll try jumping in the shower with them IN and ON tomorrow. Fingers crossed. If it’s all just a LIE, I’ll be telling everyone right here!
That is exactly what they told me, too! But I convinced them that I am a POWER USER. I absolutely need this dryer. In fact, they are trying to break into the consumer market right now, but realize their price is too high.
My suggestion is to go their website, click on the BUY NOW link, and tell them why you need this unit. They need to get more consumers using it, talking about it, and then maybe sales will justify a lower price for us.
Interesting sidebar: all the literature at the ReDux website is aimed at the AUDIS out there - not the consumer! It encourages them to clean their patients’ aids - and more important: tell the patient HOW MUCH MOISTURE was removed. It’s like a validation of the process. In time … the audi could charge a fee for providing this service to patients.
Since I am very active and very much value my aids, I’ve got a UV sanitizer and now this moisture-remover. So I’m my own one-stop shop!
Well y’won’t catch ME! I’m a Stellar’s Bluejay, and everyone knows they are noisy, pesty, social, and never sit still!
ONE more milestone for me today! I had to return to my audi to have the custom molded silicone tips REMOVED from my new Phonak Life aids. They were just excruciatingly painful to wear.
She put the run-of-the-mill power double-dome tips on these receivers and … I couldn’t wait to get home, do a good workout, then JUMP IN THE SHOWER with these aids on! WooOoOoOoOOOO! They got a good soaking, and annoyingly, the dingle-dangle behind my ear kept flopping forward like a big KIDNEY bean on a string! Argh. Since I no longer have the super snug custom molds in, I had a moment of panic wondering if the dang aids would fall ot of my ears and wash down the drain. But they didn’t fall out! I just kept pushing them back behind my ears and tried not to bend my head TOO far forward.
Got out of the shower, patted the aids down, dropped 'em in my ReDux dryer, and to my amazement, in just under 15 min, some 4.2uL of moisture was removed. That is actually a BIT less than the amount the ReDux removed after I’d showered wearing the custom mold tips in my ear just last week.
So two pieces of good news here: 1.) Phonak Life aids appear to be fairly waterproof, and 2.) the ReDux dryer gives me that extra edge of confidence that I’m not destroying a brand new pair of aids.
I’ve now dunked the Phonak Life aids in two showers with ZERO degradation of sound quality or performance at all during or after the shower. Could this be my watersport aid DREAM come true!?!!
Every time I see this thread title it puts a big smile on my face.
