I recently got fitted with new Paradise aids by the VA, after having Marvels for a while. Since there was little change in my hearing, the program settings from the old aids were simply carried over. The new aids sound just like the old ones. Maybe just a little better, but so little, it is difficult to say. I am trying rechargeables for the first time, and so far, I like them. The batteries last through even a long day of normal use. They don’t make it through a long day of streaming, however. No big deal for me. Might not be the same for everyone, though. One pet peeve concerning streaming. I like to mute the microphones on the aids when streaming with a long down press on the right aid. The Marvels had it, and though the Audiologist said these don’t, they do. However, if I happen to leave the limited range of the TV streamer, they revert back to microphones on. The P90R’s are almost exactly the same size as my M90-13T’s. The Marvels may be just a few thousandths wider, but the difference is hard to see. I got the new aids primarily because I requested the Roger On. I thought they would just install the Roger receivers in the old aids, but no, they got me new aids as well. I haven’t used the Roger On much yet, but plan on using it quite a bit. My first use was in a large room, with lots of hard surfaces. Not a good listening environment for me. What I wanted to do was actually beyond the capabilities of the Roger On, and that was to pick up voices from about 50 feet away. What I did hear was every footfall, every paper shuffle, ballpoint pen click, chair squeak. Voices, not so much. There was a conversation closer to me held at a low level, which I was able to hear very well. I got several funny looks while holding it at waist level and trying to be inconspicuous. I was prepared to explain that it was a remote microphone, used by my aids to help me hear.
Later that same night, at a local restaurant, pointing it around didn’t yield much, but placing it flat on the table, I heard everything that was going on nearby. Admittedly, a lot of it was scraping chairs, and clinking plates, but it was there. One area where I don’t think the Roger On does a very good job is in streaming. It uses its internal batteries when streaming. The TV Connector is externally powered. The range of the On is less than the TV Connector. I was hoping it would be more. You don’t have to install Roger Receivers to use the TV connector, either. In everyday use, I’ll admit, the aids don’t really help my hearing much. I get a lot of noises that actually interfere with understanding speech. It is difficult to say that they help in normal conversations. They certainly don’t help in noisy situations. I was in a place Saturday where people with normal hearing were having problems, and I didn’t seem to be any better, or worse. None of this is due to the make, or model of my aids, and I am sure any other aids would be the same, in that respect. I am going to continue to wear them, and hope to get a lot of use out of that Roger On.
