I agree that it’s less, but how much less we cannot say from personal anecdotes.
Speaking of what people said, OP said:

And indeed, this scenario is where most of the injuries seem to occur in earmold impressions, at least according to the readily available literature. Precisely because of the difficulty in inspecting one’s own ear canal.
