I’ll tell you: since I was born with a 30db loss to begin with - which rapidly progressed to about 45db in my 30s and now … well, look at my audiogram!
When you are young, you need to HEAR speech in order to form the right connections in your brain and be able to make sense of the world around you. In fact, I had an experience just a few years ago when one of my aids was not working normally for several months. The result was a significantly worse word comprehension score - from about 80+ percent to about 50%. I was shocked at how fast the brain deteriorates when it’s not able to hear.
In addition, there is a HUGE social downside to not being able to hear at a younger age. You feel isolated, paranoid, shy, withdrawn - yes, everything we tend to label OLD FOLKS with hearing problems! Take it from me, the SOONER you get your ears up to par (as best as you can) the BETTER your quality of life and self-confidence will be. I didn’t have the money for aids till I was 31. As a result, I suffered through many years of missed dialog, misunderstandings, feeling awkward, stressed. It’s a wonder I finished college and grad school, no kidding!
