Changing domes without reprogramming

What will happen if I replaced my closed domes with vented domes and didn’t go back to the audi for “programming”?
I’m willing to lose a little frequency range in exchange for not feeling like I have a head cold all the time.

It will effect the fitting of your aids. Depending on your hearing loss your speech understanding will be effected as will the amount of background noise will increase from your natural hearing.

Isn’t it one of those things where you can just try it and see, and if it doesn’t work out, go right back to the way things were?

My thoughts exactly, but wanted feedback before I spent 17 bucks.

If you go from closed domes to vented domes, you might need to have your hearing aids reprogrammed to prevent feedback.

Try it and see for yourself, you’ll lose some lower end frequencies, as mentioned some more feedback is possible, which could be quite noticeable depending on your level of loss.

This happened to me last week. My audi did some minor adjustments on my HA’s & swapped out the power domes on the left with single domes (one dome, with two tiny pinholes at the centre). He said it would allow more natural hearing in the left. (If you look at my audiogram, left is my worse ear.). He ran feedback management before finishing up. But he did tell me that if the left is worse with the single domes, I can just switch back to the power ones myself, without a visit. So far, I feel comfortable with the single domes, though I’ve been using the power domes for over a year now. Don’t know if it’s anything to do with my particular loss. :man_shrugging:t2:

I do not see your audiogram so I’m not sure what you’re loss is.
You’ll notice in my audiogram I have low frequency loss.
When I was first fitted for hearing aids the domes given to me were to small.
All I could hear was what I call whispering with feedback.
I had no low frequency.
I went back and was given what I later found out was closed
domes.
I could hear the low frequencies better.
How it will work depend on your loss.

Yeah so that doesn’t make a lot of sense, should of done that on the right then as that’s the “better” ear, so running the feedback calibration on a power dome would give a little bit more gain.

FWIW, I got a pack of 10 domes on Amazon for $10.

When I was first fitted, the audiologist started with closed domes. At the first fitting, she started me with closed domes. I kept complaining that it sounded like I was in a barrel, so she gave up and switched to open domes. Much better. I wonder if I do worse in noise with open domes, though.
